3 Tips To Minimize The Strain on Your HVAC System During the Summer

Warmer temperatures are here in the south and as summer inches closer, temperatures are only going up from here. Our A/C units take the brunt of the heat to keep us cool but there are some things we can do to help reduce the workload to protect the investment in our systems.

Here are three things you can do today to help protect your A/C unit this summer.

Install proper insulation

When leaks are present in our ductwork and we don’t have adequate insulation in our homes, energy usage skyrockets, especially as our systems try to keep our homes cold during 100+ degree days. When you have adequate insulation throughout your home, the cool air gets to stay inside versus leaking outside through cracks and leaks, making your unit work overtime. Install additional insulation to help give your unit the break it needs.

Program your thermostat according to your daily schedule

One of the most beneficial ways we can help reduce the workload on our A/C is to program our thermostat to follow our daily routines. This means, when we aren’t home for a week for vacation or we’re gone for the weekends in the summer, our thermostat is set to work accordingly. This helps reduce the workload and get your home plenty cooled off by the time you head back home.

Utilize Light Blocking Curtains

Another way you can help your A/C unit out during the warmer months is to add light-blocking shades or window treatments. Studies show that with blackout curtains or treatments, energy bills can be reduced up to 25% which is a huge savings to your bottom dollar as a homeowner. This is a super simple addition to your home but huge when it comes to monthly savings and extending the lifespan of your HVAC unit.

Bonus Tip:

Don’t forget to get your unit serviced each year for optimum efficiency. This allows A/C professionals to give your system a good overview to be sure everything is working as it should all year long.
